The Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Test is a blood test that measures the level of alpha-fetoprotein, a protein normally produced during fetal development. In adults, elevated AFP levels may be associated with certain liver conditions, liver cancer, and some germ cell tumours.
This test helps healthcare professionals assess relevant medical conditions and may be used to monitor treatment response or disease progression when clinically indicated.
Measures alpha-fetoprotein levels in the blood.
Supports the evaluation of liver conditions, including hepatocellular carcinoma.
May assist in the assessment of certain testicular and ovarian germ cell tumours.
Helps monitor AFP levels during treatment or follow-up.
May be used alongside imaging and other investigations.
Sample Type: Clotted Blood or Serum
Required Quantity: 2–3 ml
Department: Clinical Chemistry / Immunology
Fasting is generally not required unless instructed by your doctor or laboratory.
Inform your healthcare provider about existing medical conditions and medications.
Follow any specific sample collection instructions provided by the laboratory.
AFP is a tumour marker, but elevated levels do not automatically indicate cancer. Levels may also increase in certain non-cancerous liver conditions and during pregnancy. This test is not suitable as a standalone cancer screening or diagnostic test. Results should be interpreted alongside medical history, imaging, and other investigations.
Reporting Time: To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Please confirm test availability and sample collection requirements with the laboratory before booking.
