The Anti-LKM (Liver Kidney Microsomal Antibodies) Test is a blood test used to detect autoantibodies directed against proteins found in liver and kidney cells.
This test helps healthcare professionals investigate Autoimmune Hepatitis, particularly Type 2 Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH-2), which is commonly associated with Anti-LKM-1 antibodies. Autoimmune hepatitis is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks liver cells, potentially causing inflammation and liver damage.
Detects Liver Kidney Microsomal (LKM) antibodies in the blood.
Helps investigate suspected Autoimmune Hepatitis, particularly Type 2.
Supports the evaluation of unexplained liver inflammation or abnormal liver function tests.
May assist in distinguishing autoimmune liver conditions from other causes of liver disease.
Provides additional diagnostic information alongside other autoimmune liver antibody tests.
Helps healthcare professionals determine whether further liver-related investigations are required.
Sample Type: Clotted Blood or Serum
Required Quantity: 3–5 cc (3–5 ml)
Department: Immunology / Serology (subject to laboratory confirmation).
Fasting is generally not required for the Anti-LKM Test.
Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of liver disease or autoimmune disorders.
Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are currently taking.
Inform your healthcare provider if you have previously been diagnosed with hepatitis or have abnormal liver function tests.
Follow any specific sample collection instructions provided by the laboratory.
The Anti-LKM Test is used to help investigate autoimmune liver diseases, particularly Type 2 Autoimmune Hepatitis.
A positive Anti-LKM result may indicate the presence of liver-related autoantibodies and can support a diagnosis of Autoimmune Hepatitis when considered alongside other clinical findings. However, a positive result alone does not confirm the condition.
A negative Anti-LKM result indicates that the antibodies tested were not detected but does not completely rule out Autoimmune Hepatitis.
Anti-LKM-1 antibodies are commonly associated with Type 2 Autoimmune Hepatitis, although these antibodies may occasionally be detected in other liver conditions. The specific antibody subtype measured should be confirmed with the laboratory.
Additional investigations, such as Liver Function Tests (LFTs), ANA, ASMA, serum IgG levels, viral hepatitis screening, and sometimes a liver biopsy, may be recommended depending on the patient's clinical condition.
Results should be interpreted by a healthcare professional alongside symptoms, medical history, liver function tests, and other relevant investigations.
Reporting Time: To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Please confirm test availability and sample collection requirements with the laboratory before booking.
