The Anti-RNP (Anti-Ribonucleoprotein Antibodies) Test is a blood test used to detect autoantibodies directed against ribonucleoproteins, particularly U1-ribonucleoprotein (U1-RNP), found within the body's cells.
This test helps healthcare professionals investigate autoimmune connective tissue diseases, especially Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD), a condition that may involve overlapping features of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Systemic Sclerosis, and inflammatory muscle diseases.
Anti-RNP testing is commonly performed as part of an autoimmune antibody profile or Extractable Nuclear Antigen (ENA) panel.
Detects antibodies against ribonucleoproteins, particularly U1-RNP.
Helps investigate suspected Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD).
Supports the evaluation of autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
May assist in investigating symptoms such as joint pain, muscle weakness, swollen hands, and Raynaud's phenomenon.
Helps assess patients with overlapping features of different connective tissue diseases.
Provides additional diagnostic information alongside other autoimmune antibody tests.
Sample Type: Serum
Required Quantity: To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Department: Immunology / Serology (subject to laboratory confirmation).
Fasting is generally not required for the Anti-RNP Test.
Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of autoimmune or connective tissue disorders.
Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are currently taking.
Inform your healthcare provider if you experience symptoms such as joint pain, muscle weakness, swollen fingers, or changes in finger color when exposed to cold.
Follow any specific sample collection instructions provided by the laboratory.
The Anti-RNP Test helps investigate autoimmune connective tissue diseases, particularly Mixed Connective Tissue Disease.
A positive Anti-RNP result indicates that antibodies against ribonucleoproteins were detected. High levels of anti-U1-RNP antibodies are strongly associated with MCTD, but a positive result alone does not confirm the diagnosis.
Anti-RNP antibodies may also be detected in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic Sclerosis, and other autoimmune conditions.
A negative result indicates that the antibodies measured by the laboratory were not detected but does not completely rule out an autoimmune connective tissue disease.
Additional investigations, such as ANA, ENA Profile, Anti-dsDNA, Anti-Sm Antibodies, ESR, and CRP, may be recommended depending on the patient's symptoms and clinical findings.
The exact RNP antibody target and testing method should be confirmed with the laboratory, as different assays may detect different ribonucleoprotein antibodies.
Results should be interpreted by a healthcare professional alongside symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and other relevant investigations.
Reporting Time: To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Please confirm test availability and sample collection requirements with the laboratory before booking.
