The Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) IgM Test is a blood test used to detect IgM antibodies against the Varicella Zoster Virus. This virus causes chickenpox (varicella) and can reactivate later in life as shingles (herpes zoster).
This test may help healthcare professionals evaluate a suspected recent VZV infection when interpreted alongside clinical symptoms and other investigations.
Detection of IgM antibodies against Varicella Zoster Virus.
Possible recent VZV infection.
Serological evidence that may support the evaluation of chickenpox.
Antibody response associated with suspected VZV infection.
Sample Type: Serum.
Sample Quantity: 2–3 cc.
Collection Instructions: Blood should be collected in an appropriate tube, and serum should be separated according to laboratory requirements.
Fasting is generally not required.
Inform your healthcare provider about recent infections, vaccination history, and current medications.
Follow any specific preparation instructions provided by the laboratory.
Chickenpox (Varicella).
Shingles (Herpes Zoster).
Suspected Recent Varicella Zoster Virus Infection.
A positive VZV IgM result does not independently confirm an active infection.
IgM testing may produce false-positive results and may not reliably distinguish primary infection from reactivation.
PCR testing of an appropriate lesion sample is generally preferred for confirming suspected active VZV infection.
Results should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional alongside clinical findings.
To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Please confirm test availability and sample collection requirements with the laboratory before booking.
