The Zinc Transporter 8 (ZnT8) Autoantibody Test is a specialised blood test used to detect autoantibodies targeting Zinc Transporter 8, a protein found in insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.
This test is primarily used to support the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and help differentiate it from Type 2 Diabetes. It may also assist in evaluating individuals who are at increased risk of developing autoimmune diabetes.
The test detects ZnT8 autoantibodies in the blood and may help with:
Supporting the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.
Differentiating autoimmune diabetes from Type 2 Diabetes.
Identifying autoimmune responses against pancreatic beta cells.
Evaluating individuals at increased risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes.
Supporting further investigation of diabetes-related autoimmune conditions.
Sample Type: Blood (Serum).
Sample Quantity: To be confirmed by the laboratory.
Collection Tube: Red-top or gold-top serum separator tube, as instructed by the laboratory.
Collection Method: Blood is collected from a vein by a qualified healthcare professional.
Fasting: No fasting is required.
Medication: No specific medication restrictions unless advised by the physician.
Collection Time: The sample can generally be collected at any time of the day.
Follow any additional instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare professional.
A positive result indicates the presence of ZnT8 autoantibodies but does not independently establish a diagnosis.
A negative result does not completely exclude Type 1 Diabetes.
Results should be interpreted alongside other diabetes autoantibodies, blood glucose levels, and clinical findings.
Additional investigations may be recommended by the treating healthcare professional.
Reporting Time: 3–5 Days.
Please confirm test availability and sample collection requirements with the laboratory before booking.
